History

Nestlé was inspired to create the $100.000 Bar in 1966 because of the popularity of three TV programs – “The $64,000 Question,” “The Big Surprise” and “Twenty-One.” These were quiz game shows. “The Big Surprise” was one of the first trivia shows. Contestants chose a category and then answered questions whose prizes ranged from $100 to $100,000. Of course, Nestlé had to name it “The $100,000 Bar” and not the “$64,000 Bar” to avoid trademark infringement.

The original wrapper included the phrase "A fortune in flavor."

The name of this candy bar was changed in 1985 to the 100 Grand Bar. We really don’t know why. Perhaps it was simply because 100 Grand is easier to say. If you know the reason (or want to guess), please email us.

Cultural References

  • In the Seinfeld episode, “The Dealership,” a mechanic steals a candy bar from George Costanza. George has to prove he took it and has to find out what kind of candy bar it was. A supervisor suggests that it was a $100,000 Bar. Someone else says, “Didn’t they change the name from $100,000 Bar to 100 Grand?”
  • In the Colbert Platinum, a recurring segment of the Colbert Report which presents tongue-in-cheek advice and news for extremely wealthy people, a picture of a 100 Grand is used.
  • In The Office, Season 3, episode “Business School,” Michael Scott tries to get a laugh by telling his students that if they sell enough they will make a One Hundred Grand. He throws the candy bar into the audience and no one tries to catch it. It hits a student on the head.
  • Several radio disk jockeys have offered 100 Grand as a prize to a contest. The disappointed winner gets only a candy bar. In 2005, one of these pranks ended up in a law suit by a woman in Kentucky.
  • This candy bar often finds its way into conversation. Guys will say something like, “I’ve got 100 Grand. Will you go out with me?”
  • In the game of Memory, a question is “Your soon-to-be husband is worth this much?”
