History

Harry Brown and J. C. Haley, founders of Brown & Haley Co. of Tacoma, Washington, invented the recipe for Almond Roca in 1923. J. C. Haley wanted an unusual name for this candy, one that would make people remember it. It is said that a local librarian suggested “roca” which is the Spanish word for “rock” and Almond Roca was born.

The candy was an immediate hit. But they had to overcome the problem of maintaining freshness. In 1927 Brown & Haley Co. became the first candy makers in the world to use a sealed tin can container. J. C. Haley thought that if a tin can could keep coffee fresh, it certainly could do the same for candy. And it does.

Almond Roca’s popularity was limited to the Pacific Northwest until World War II. Because it was sealed in a tin can, it could be shipped overseas to our troops and still be fresh. The candy became immensely popular, so popular that an entire chapter is devoted to it in the Official History of World War II. One noted event is that is that US generals would not turn over responsibility for an occupied country to other Allies unless they could take with them three railroad card of Almond Roca.

Since World War II, Almond Roca has become popular all over the world. Five billion pieces of candy have been enjoyed. Sir Edmund Hillary took it with him on many of his climbs in the Himalayan Mountains. It is a favorite of the Japanese royal family. Almond Roca is sold in 35 countries on six continents.

Almond Roca is still made at the same place in Tacoma, Washington. The factory has been made a historic landmark.
