Beer Nuts
Beer Nuts are peanuts covered with a sweet and salty glaze. They do not contain beer. Rather, the name is intended to suggest that they go well with beer.
HistoryBeer Nuts are still made in the town where they originated – Bloomington, Illinois. In 1937, Edward Shirk and is son, Arlo, took over the Caramel Crisp candy store in Bloomington. One of the candies they sold was called Redskins. They were glazed peanuts with their red skins still on. In 1950, these peanuts were packaged as Shirk’s Glazed Peanuts and sold in local National Liquor Stores. Beginning in 1953, with the help of a local food distributor named Eldridge Brewster, the sales of these peanuts gradually expanded until they were sold all over the country. The Beer Nuts trademark was registered at this time. It was spelled with all capitals - BEER NUTS. |
